My exsistance has far more meaning than any Christian's could ever have, surely it's far more meaningful to give your own meaning to your exsistance than have a meaning forced upon you by someone who doesn't even know you.
Just thought I should chime in. I am a Christian and I respect anybody who shows respect. As for meaning and significance, if you really think through what it means to have meaning or purpose; purpose is derived in the act of creation. The purpose of scissors is to cut, because that was the reason the manufacturer made the scissors. This same concept applies to all created things. If something was not created, it cannot have a purpose because the purpose is irrevocably tied up with the reason why it was created. You can try to make your life significant, but if there is no God your life cannot have a purpose. If we are a statistical accident, with no intended design, how can something that is an accident have a purpose? An accident was unintended. You can't have it both ways. Either God is real or there is no purpose to existence. And most people would admit that their life has a purpose. We feel this deep in our "souls."

There are just as many things in existence without a purpose, as there are completely accidental things that happen to serve a purpose. For example, many animals (including humans) have vestigial traits that serve no purpose (e.g. appendix in humans). Post-its and microwave ovens were created accidentally by humans with no original purpose. Don't use something so generalized to "prove" that God is the only reason we have purpose in our lives.
I rather enjoy the idea that my life has no real purpose. We're all just a bunch of molecules that, for some reason, have a brief (70 or so years) state of being self-aware.

The universe is vast, our tiny little mudball is nothing. We are utterly inconsequential to the universe. Nothing we do has any effect whatsoever on the universe as a whole.
The only meaning in life is that which we ourselves give to it.
Does that make it any less important to us? No. We are born, we live, we die. We can experience great happiness and sadness. These things are important only because they are important to us, but that does not make them any less "real".
Live life for what it is, love it for what it is, accept that death is inevitable. Don't waste life with delusions based on primitive mythology, reality is awesome enough for anybody.

My only beef with religion is that people simply take it too far. There are good religious people out there but sadly they get a bad rep because of the actions of others. IE terrorists and christian fanatics. Also I gotta wonder if we even actually need it. There are more atheists today then ever before, could it be we as a race are growing up out of our infancy and leaving fairy tales behind along with other crazy notions like a flat world?? Maybe in a few more thousand years we'll all have grown up to where we dont need to believe in a almighty creator and simply accept the wonder of the universe for what it is. One day we might unravel the secrete of things like quantum theory and maybe we'll find what "created" the universe. But please, lay off the darwinist's and all the scientist that put forward crazy ideas like the earth being round. Anyhow, although we cannot prove it - isn't religion the basis of any sort of morality? Okay, it's known that America is the most/one of the most religious countries on the planet. Japan is one of the most atheistic. Japan has a lower murder rate than American.

Isn't religion considered the foundation for most pious acts? The welfare state in Britain was created with the fundaments of biblical doctrines. For much of medicine also, it was the will to be selfless, a trait mostly invented by religion, that made doctors strive so much. Florence Nightingale is a strong example, who risked her life as a lowly nurse in the Crimean War and Transformed nursing to be the prestigious occupation it is today. This was because of her Christian beliefs.

I believe in the divine. I'm pretty sure that the word God is used on something that we cannot comprehend. Our feelings of justice and cruelty may be different in an alternate and divine thought-process. I also choose the Christian path, although I agree it can be a bit uncited, as a path to whatever transcendance the higher world has for me. 'God's will be done'.

Religion being the source of morality is an absolute joke. You're speaking of an organization that preys upon the uninformed and desperate people for their time and money in exchange for "everlasting life" (I'm speaking of Christianity here). Look through Leviticus, Exodus, Genesis, these books are full of infanticide, genocide, rape, degradation of women, and racism. These books, interestingly enough, happen to be the foundation of the organizations that you happen to say is the source of morality. If people were to follow the literal wording of the basis of the morality that you claim comes from religion (the big 3) then we'd have people killing each other left and right. Kid mouthing off to his parents? Kid gets his head dashed against the rocks. Working on the Holy Day? Sounds like a stoning. Woman won't submit to you? Time for a beating. If religion were the source of morality we'd live in chaos.
Selflessness or altruism, cannot be claimed by religion. The bible is full of in-group thinking, us against them mentality. If you weren't down with the big man in the sky you had to die. And seeing how that wasn't enough, your wife and sons were killed and your virgin daughters were taken as concubines. Anything else was fair game for looting unless it was deemed "unclean". Even today the same mentality exists. When's the last time you heard a "true" Christian treat someone of a different religion the same as they do their own? It seems to me that religious people are all too ready to condemn and berate those who say they don't agree.
Ever wonder how religions came to have so much power in the world? Money! Money buys politicians and politicians build legal containment areas for people with convenient loops holes for themselves. And they've got tons of free money because they've created the problem and sold you the solution in the same breath. All it requires to be saved is a little time and a little money. If they were committed to the way they tell other people to live they'd be dirt poor from giving it all away. The fact that the pope rides around in an armored Mercedes is disgusting, not to mention his palaces.

Well, living in a world where nearly anything you do could send you to an eternity of suffering seems pretty hopeless to me, but remember, god loves you. Adhering to a religion violates what it is to be a human being. There's no reason I should have to fear eternal torment because the girl next to me gives me a boner or because of some thought I had, regardless of whether or not I act on it. A world where people are taught to ashamed of being human is pretty damn hopeless.

The term god is more of a generality of all things throughout the universe. I use the term god not as a creator or anything to do with religion but as a tool to explain the universe. God is everything; you, me, the dirt, trees and the air we breath not some supreme being that blesses you with eternal life in some wacked out acid trip called heaven. It simply makes sense if you are open-minded enough to think outside of whatever you grew up believing. Coming from a former christian, I found myself trying to reach god, and later(thankfully) reached the simple conclusion that our physical universe is all that is reality. It is not despair. It is not meaningless existence. It simply means making the most of what is actually there. Working to benefit people makes sense whereas religion is a hindrance to the final hopes and goals of world peace. Just research history and you will come to realize(again, with an open mind, throwing to the side what you were told to be true) more people died and are dying as a result of their standardized belief of "God"
