  its a homemade version of a PPoE adapter.
  
  PPoE is Provided Power over IP. its used to power things like in-line VOIP phones.

  RE: nerd You are incorrect. What you describe is PoE - Power over Ethernet. PPoE does not exist. PPPoE is Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. Second, it would not function as a home-made PoE adapter. PoE adapters do not provide AC power, they provide approximately 12v DC - so you'd need to have some kind of AC/DC converter in there somewhere. What this actually is, is an Etherkiller - a device used by the Bastard Operator From Hell to destroy switches/computers/routers/whatever when he didn't feel like doing work.

  In Europe, especially Germany, they use the power lines to transmit data packets. It surprisingly works but the problem is security. Do your research.
